Lake and 25 other members with Hawaiian ancestry, with the christened Kokololio Swift Winds of Waikapu as the clubs first canoe. Growing in size, the club competed in its first state regatta in 1962, merging paddlers from Hawaiian, Kahului, and Lahaina canoe clubs to create the crews.
